As a prospective educator, I began encountering various issues surrounding the use of the internet by children in some of my classes. Of course, like so many things, the internet is a mixed blessing – on one hand it opens up a world of knowledge to children and serves as a potentially effective tool in the learning process. Sadly, however, there are those with darker intentions who would use the internet as a means of exploiting children. After doing some research to better educate myself on the issue of how children can be protected from on-line criminals, I encountered ACPO, and eventually sought out information as to how I could, in the context of a student – and eventually a teacher – educate students, parents, and the community at large.
